Tarapoto is the main city in the Mayo Valley in northern Peru's jungle. The city is known for its numerous palm trees, the hilly surroundings and for many beautiful waterfalls, including Ahuashiyacu (the laughing water) and Huacamaillo. The beauties of the landscape, the lush vegetation and the pleasant climate make this area compare to paradise. The variety of orchids is famous. More than 2500 species have already been identified. Among the lakes, the most notable are Laguna Azul and Lago Lindo, located east of Tarapoto in the Cordillera Azul.
Contrary to the usual riverside settlements, the town of Lamas is on top of the mountain. It was founded by Quechua-speaking Andean Indians, who still largely preserve their traditions today. So this city is called the folklore center of the region.
Due to the good flight connection to Lima and the relative proximity, Tarapoto is also an ideal starting point for tours to Kuelap, Pacaya-Samiria, Yurimaguas, the lakes Rimachi and Cuipari or to visit the Shayahuitas people in Balsapuerto.
