Regional travel in Peru – Travel program PTW-MAN002-en

Mountain cloud forest and Amazon lowlands

These tours take you right into the middle of nature in a unique biotop: in the mountain cloud forest of the Manu National Park on the eastern slopes of the Andes, where flora and fauna are more diverse than anywhere else on earth. Manu Ecolodge Tambo Paititi is a haven for wildlife viewing. We offer you a variety of opportunities to explore the flora and fauna of the mountain cloud forest. We continue to Tambo Eori in the territory of the Masko Indians in the lowland forest of flat lands.

Program 1

6 days / 5 nights – Start: daily

Day 1: from Cusco to Tambo Paititi Lodge

Early in the morning you will leave Cusco with our private vehicle. After a winding and varied journey through small communities and lonely landscapes, you will reach the village of Paucartambo and, after a final climb, the border to Manu National Park at the Acjanaco checkpoint (3550 m).

From here you can enjoy the view of the seemingly endless green carpet of lowland treetops. Drive down the eastern slopes of the Andes and you can observe the fascinating change from the barren landscape of the altiplano to the diversity flora and fauna of the Manu mountain jungle. In the early afternoon you will reach the gorge of the San Pedro river. A short jungle hike takes you to the Manu eco-lodge Tambo Paititi (1470 m), uniquely situated on a high plateau above the river.

Day 2: Tambo Paititi

At sunrise you will experience the mountain cloud forest of Manu National Park very much alive. The lodge and its immediate surroundings offer numerous opportunities to observe birds, monkeys and other animals while having a hearty breakfast. The mountain cloud forest is the habitat of the colorful rock cock (Rupicola peruviana, peruvian national bird) and many other bird species such as toucan, quetzal, tanager and oropendola. Capuchin monkeys and woolly monkeys, the largest monkey species in Amazonia, are also welcome guests.

The guide takes you on a voyage of discovery through the mountain cloud forest on lonely jungle paths and explains the flora and fauna of the Manu National Park. Be amazed by the variety of orchids around the lodge! You can also sit comfortably from your armchair at observation posts, directly on Tambo Paititi or on one of the terraces on the banks of San Pedro. The crystal clear water of the river also invites you to take a refreshing bath.

Day 3: from Tambo Paititi to Tambo Eori

In the course of the morning you will continue your journey through the jungle, which is becoming increasingly dense, until you reach the lowlands of the Amazon jungle. After a one-hour boat ride on the Alto Madre de Dios river, you will reach Maskoitania, the former settlement area of the Masko Indians and the Manu eco-lodge Tambo Eori (470 m). A jaguar has been sighted here several times!

Day 4: Tambo Eori

Around Tambo Eori, jungle paths used exclusively by visitors lead through primary and secondary jungle. There are excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing. Numerous species of mammals, birds, insects and amphibians of the tropical rainforest live here. On selected paths you will get to know the unique ecosystem of the Manu rainforest together with its flora and fauna.

Together with our guide, you can hike to a tapir lick close to the lodge to, with a bit of luck, observe the largest mammals of the Amazon at close range. At a old arm of the river (cocha) you go to observation posts for otters and caimans. You end this unforgettable day with a night hike.

Day 5: from Tambo Eori to Tambo Paititi

Early in the morning you start exploring the lowland rainforest again, then return by boat and bus to Tambo Paititi in the mountain cloud forest. The crystal-clear water of the San Pedro river invites you to take a refreshing dip in the rushing river, and you can reflect on the experiences of the past few days on the lodge's cozy terrace.

Day 6: from Tambo Paititi to Cusco

You have another chance to see the mountain cloud forest animals that are active in the morning hours, then you have to say goodbye to Manu National Park.
