Tarapoto

Tarapoto is the most important city in the Mayo valley in the northern jungle of Peru. The city is famous because of the numerous palms and the surrounding hills with many waterfalls, such as Ahuashiyacu (the laughing water) and Huacamaillo. The beautiful landscapes, the vast vegetation and the friendly weather are important facts that let this place look as paradise. It is famous for the big quantity of orchids. There have been registrated more than 2500 types. The most important lakes you can visit in this region are «Laguna Azul» and «Lago Lindo», that are located in the eastern side of Tarapoto in the «Cordillera Azul». 

Contrasting to the common cummunities, the city of Lamas has been build on the top of the hill. It was founded by Quechua speaking indions that came fron the Andes and preserve their traditions until today. Thats why this place is known as the folclorical centre of this region. 

Because ot its constant plane connetions with Lima and its location, Tarapoto is a good starting point for trips to Kuelap, Pacaya-Samiria, Yurimaguas, the lakes Rimachi and Cuipari or to visit the community of Shayahuitas in Balsapuerto.
